Birding the Cascade Mountains – Mount Lassen National Park

The Mount Lassen field trip will take you through the Oak and Grey Pine forest of the California Foothills following the Sacramento River. The initial destination is Burney Falls State Park, where we will search for notable species including the Black Swift, Rock Wren, Canyon Wren, American Dipper, Townsend’s Warbler, Red-breasted Sapsucker, and Vaux’s Swift.

Stay overnight in Burney. On day two, we’ll visit Lassen National Park to search for high-elevation birds like Sooty Grouse, Callippe Hummingbird, Clark’s Nutcracker, Gray Jay, Cassin’s Finch, Black-backed Woodpecker, and Townsend’s Solitaire.An overnight trip to Burney, or a two-day extension to the Sierra Valley—including Yuba Pass—offers access to one of California’s largest alpine meadows. Overnight Susanville and Truckee CA.
