Birding in Guatemala has much to offer and is a perfect first tropical birding adventure, with many varied habitats.  Guatemala is a small country, about 42,043 square miles (108,890 sq km), about the size of Tennessee. Mexico, Belize, and Honduras border Guatemala. Many birders favor Guatemala because it has many Neotropical bird families, outstanding diversity of nature, and the Mayan culture.

You will visit a number of habitats, each a different ecosystem, in search of new species to add to your life list and for immediate enjoyment. We will visit cool high-elevation pine forests for the Pink-headed Warbler, the volcanic highlands, the Cloud Forest above the beautiful, spectacular Lake Atitlan, and the Dry Scrub habitat of the Sierra de las Minas.

YBT has an exciting small group (6 birders) field trip into the Lake Atitlan and the Cloud Forest region of Guatemala. This unique small group approach will give you more time to be on the bird and gain confidence in birding the tropics. We will bird and have lodging in the coffee growing region with a day field trip into the higher elevation mountain forest. YBT hires local certified Guatemalan field guides to assist with your needs in the field.
